A practical application of statistical process control to evaluate the performance rate of academic programmes: implications and suggestions

Purpose This study aims to properly and objectively assess the students’ progress in bachelor programmes by applying statistical process control (SPC). Specifically, authors focused their analysis on variation performance rates business studies courses taught at a Spanish University. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative methodology was used, using an action-based case developed public university. Previous research theoretical issues related quality indicators of training were discussed, followed application SPC these outputs. Findings The evaluation rate that comprised programs through revealed significant differences with respect evaluations obtained traditional procedures. Similarly, results show parameters (central line interval), depending adopted approach (by programmes, academic year department). Research limitations/implications has inherent limitations linked both selection data sources. Practical implications provides framework involved assurance processes higher education. Originality/value paper contributes discourse importance robust effective assessment curriculum education context tools such as SPC.
